Trillium Farms has nearly 9 million egg-laying hens and expansion plans currently are underway. When the expansion is complete, the farms will raise approximately 13 million birds. As the farms have grown, our commitment remains firm - to provide the highest quality of care for our birds and the environment, while providing safe, nutritious eggs for our community and the world.
Animal Care
Everything we do at Trillium Farms is tied back to animal care. Since assuming ownership of the Ohio farms, our leadership team has made significant investments in training and compliance to ensure that our hens receive the best care at all times. We employ a staff veterinarian to oversee the health and medical needs of our flocks and to ensure our animal care teams are providing excellent care.
The majority of the birds housed on our farms are in contemporary cage housing. In addition, the farm is in the process of adding enriched colony cage housing to some sites as well. The farm uses manure belt technology with air drying to provide a better environment for farm workers and birds by removing manure daily from barns. This technology also allows us to provide constant access to feed and water for the hens and careful monitoring of their health and well-being.
Food Safety
Providing safe, wholesome eggs to our consumers is a top priority at Trillium Farms. We achieve that by participating in quality assurance programs and taking many preventive measures. Trillium operates our farms under the Ohio Egg Quality Assurance Program, the UEP 5-Star Program, and follows the federal Egg Rule and FDA guidelines
Another key factor to keeping eggs safe is preventing diseases at all costs. Biosecurity is an issue that we take very seriously. This means that all visitors must wear protective gear while in the barns and that all employees are prohibited to visit multiple farms within 48 hours. Biosecurity protocols also are essential to maintaining the health of our hens.
In addition, Trillium Farms has a Salmonella Enteriditis prevention plan in place as a preventative measure. As part of the plan, our farm regularly tests environmental egg samples to ensure our flocks are healthy and our eggs are safe, wholesome and nutritious.
Environmental Responsibility
Trillium Farms uses state-of-the-art technologies in our barns that allow for the protection of the land, air and water, as well as provide a safe, clean environment for the flocks.
Trillium regularly works with state regulators to ensure that the farm is in compliance in all areas. For example, the farm participates in many regulatory programs, including the Ohio Department of Agriculture's Livestock Environmental Permitting Program (LEPP). The program develops rules and regulations for the state's large livestock and poultry farms.
As part of LEPP, Trillium Farms adheres to a manure management plan, which requires regular monitoring and records reporting of soil samples, manure analysis, weather conditions, etc. Our farm managers regularly participate in training provided as part of the LEPP Certified Livestock Manager program.
Additionally, water quality is protected by ensuring that manure management and handling techniques are properly executed. Trillium Farms recycles all manure as a fertilizer and sells it to local farms.
Our farm follows a pest and rodent control program, which requires daily monitoring and weekly record-keeping. Trillium Farms also uses a belt battery system to automatically remove manure by a conveyor belt, which helps to reduce odors and increase air quality inside the barns.
Community Involvement
Trillium provides significant benefits to the local community, providing jobs and other economic benefits in the communities where we operate. In addition, our farm purchases grain from area farmers and supplies from local businesses.
Our farm continually seeks opportunities to educate our community about what we do on our farms and strive to have a positive relationship with our neighbors. Open houses and community events encourage dialogue with our neighbors.
Trillium Farms has long supported hunger relief and other important causes in Ohio. We encourage giving back among our team members as part of our charitable commitment.
